Studies We've Done

City Home Heating Study
We were retained by Cityhome to study six electrically heated buildings, which showed wide variations in electrical costs from apartment to apartment. The project included modelling typical units on the Carrier E20II computer program to determine, in theory, what the utility costs should be for each apartment type in each building, analysing electrical bills, graphing the actual utility costs against our estimates, reviewing the drawings of the subject buildings, inspecting about 25 percent of the buildings, interviewing tenants, attending tenants meetings, and recommending ways to reduce energy costs in these buildings.

Heating Studies
Weinstein Taylor are experts in heating and air conditioning. We are often asked to evaluate heating and air conditioning systems for clients, to estimate their remaining lifespan or to comment on conditions that could shorten the lifespan of equipment. We have done studies of 55 heating plants for high rise apartment buildings for Toronto Housing Company, a study of 26 smaller heating plants for Toronto Housing Company, a study of the heating of the student residences for the University of Toronto, Scarborough campus, a study of the district heating plant for St. Andrew’s College, and studies of several boiler plants for the Metropolitan Toronto Housing Authority.

Condition Studies/Maintenance Plans/ Replacement Reserve Fund Studies: Various Projects
We have done building inspections and condition surveys for many buildings. These formed the basis of long term maintenance plans and replacement reserve fund studies, either prepared by Weinstein Taylor or by other consultants. Our clients for this service include the University of Toronto, Longview Housing Co-operative, Scarborough Heights Co-op, Trethewey Co-operative, Deerhurst Lodge, Southampton Princess Hotel (Bermuda) and the Hamilton Princess Hotel (Bermuda).

Toronto Housing Company Heating and Air Conditioning Study
We were retained to study 25 boiler plants in large residential buildings for THC and to prepare a report indicating potential problems and inefficiencies of those systems. We were subsequently retained to study the heating systems of another 26 buildings which were somewhat smaller. We also studied buyout proposals for more than a dozen buildings with rental equipment and recommended buying the equipment from Enbridge, abandoning the equipment, or continuing to rent the equipment.

Champlain Apartments Air Quality Study
This new residential/commercial building had several problems including the development of mould in some apartments, repeated DX condenser failures and poor air quality and temperature control in the ground floor commercial office space. Weinstein Taylor and Associated was retained by Toronto Housing Company to study these issues and recommend remedial measures.

Energy Audits
With ever increasing energy costs, large-building owners are becoming interested in controlling utility costs. We have worked for many of Toronto’s larger building owners and managers to prepare reports listing ways to save energy and money.

Ontario Housing Energy Management Study
Weinstein Taylor and Associates was awarded a contract by Ontario Housing Corporation to establish average energy and water consumption for their buildings, and to recommend energy saving measures that could be applied to their portfolio. We collected and organized energy consumption data of 33 selected social housing buildings in Southern Ontario, reviewed the construction drawings, inspected the buildings and recommended ECM (energy saving measures) specific to each building.

Condition Studies, Maintenance Plans and Replacement Reserve Fund Studies
We have performed condition surveys, maintenance plans and replacement reserve fund studies for many of our clients.  In this building that had been previously renovated in 1985, we inspected each apartment unit looking at the heating system, the mechanical and plumbing systems, ventilation, life safety, the building envelope, and interior finishes.
